With the implementation of an emissions trading system (ETS), the government of Quebec has created a real carbon market, now linked to one in California. This represents a paradigm shift that will have profound impacts on the Quebec economy and energy markets. In this context, citizens and businesses of Quebec need a reliable source of information that will help them understand the carbon market as well as other policies, technologies and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The academic community has the capacity to contribute to such understanding and create novel partnerships with government, business, environmentalists and the general public. Established as a non-profit organization to mobilize academic reseachers, the Quebec Carbon Institute (IQCarbone) aspires to see the academic community realize its full potential in this field.
